Motorcycle = Survival
What do you do when TSHTF and the roads are backed up or blocked off?
I just bought this BMW 650 GS. It can be used offroad if needed and is a sporty, yet comfortable touring bike. http://www.bikez.com/pictures/bmw/20...%20-%20BMW.jpg |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
What was the cost of that bike, Big Daddy.....:questionm
BTW, screw the WTSHTF, can you pick-up women with that....:bull-smile: |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
Thread name is a self contradiction.

Oh that is a very fine point, Master Infidel...

1) I bought it used with about 20,000 miles on it..... So, I got a good price. 2) As for picking up women....the earth may need to be repopulated after TSHTF....in which case I hope to have lots of prospects. |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
I wanted a bike like crazy for awhile. While putting along towards saving up the money, suddenly I noticed ever motorcycle on the road, ...and every story about a dead or crippled rider. I settled on a car. I know myself well enough to know I would be dead on a bike.

Re: Motorcycle = Survival
:D Nice bike !!!
I only own dirt bikes now. They can go virtually anywhere...on or off road. Had to give up highway bikes...asshats are motorcycle blind. A dozen close calls convinced me I would have a short life span if I kept insisting to ride on urban highways. The average non motorcycle owner will ignore a bike like it didn't exist. Be careful...assume drivers in big vehicles can't see you. Aside from that...have fun. :D:D:D:D |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
I have seriously thought about this. My biggest problem is my missus. I think that she wouldn't cut it on a bike. Maybe with a sidecar we could do it? Or if we had a retreat and we didn't need to cart gear?
A bike is well worth thinking about peep's How about this baby :bull-buddy-icon: I've got a chubby just thinking about it. |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
Honda Ct-90 1976 I own a couple of these. They get about a 100 mpg. They used points and condenser, so an EMP won't effect them. They just run and run. High/low range on the tranny. Go just about everywhere. I know, very unglamorous. That in itself is a good thing.

(but deservedly) they have acquired collector status, which tends to make good examples on the pricey side. |

'71 CB100. You've got that straight. Can't kill them. It's a street bike, but Lord knows my brother took it off the pavement often enough. But for survival? Once you run out of gas, any motorbike becomes a paperweight. I hate horses, but if you're looking at serious survival preparation, that's the way to go. Fuels itself, repairs itself, and with a little planning ... replaces itself too. |

No fuel?
I don't have a SUB, too many bikes, trikes, and motorscooters already.... Sport Utility Bicycle dtnwn |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
Suzuki DRZ is another great choice. 1cyl 400cc 4 stroke Dual Sport bike.
Can be a dirt bike or a legal street bike. No doubt it gets great gas mileage and is relatively cheap to buy. With saddlebags and a rack on the back I'll bet you could haul a good amount of stuff. http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gal...005%20%204.jpg |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
I've posted this before. About the ONLY thing this vehicle WON'T ROLL OVER is a tank. The double bumper will handle damn near anything and WILL either push it out of the way OR crush it, depending on the vehicle in questions size. With double fuel tanks, it will go in excess of 1000 miles without refueling. Plus it WILL BURN almost any fuel, including gasoline (mix in a bit of used motor oil).
Can't get much better. http://www.goldismoney.info/forums/a...1&d=1191612922 |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
I loved that Honda ct-90. But for a survival vehicle I want something I can solar charge. A bike or trike converted to electric or electric assist plus an electric golf cart for hauling stuff.
The runs post EMP is a good thing though. I'm not sure it would. Even plug wires would melt in serious EMP. The one in the 1800s melted heavy telegraph lines. A regular bicycle would get you around town post EMP. I prefer the old Raleigh 3 speeds though I had a nice 10 speed I rode many miles. But I like sitting upright. You lose some speed, but I enjoy the view more. And even if TSHTF enjoying life remains important to me. Of course in very hilly areas 10 speeds are necessary. |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
I got into a discussion on this very subject with a friend of mine. Depending on how TSHTF there might be lots of gas around for quite a while. If sub orbit EMP's are used to start this there might not be many cars working do to there excessive use of computor chips. Diesels will work except for the high tech ones that use computor technology. Engines with points and condensers should be fine though. But there arn't that many of them. When the gas runs out I've got bicycles with some extra tubes, and then finally a good pair of boots. Problem is, if you got something of value you can bet someone will try to take it. Might be best to hunker down for a while. "Blessed are the Meek, for they shall inherit the Earth"

Re: Motorcycle = Survival
:rolleyes_m: I have two large frame 36V electric scooters for backup..
Both can be solar charged...not exactly off road, but both have a 65 mile range between charges. Both are very strong... About 40mph top speed on a level highway ( I changed the drive sprockets ) :>) Some of the newer moped class bikes will do 60 mph with a little tweaking and 90 mpg sounds pretty good if fuel gets scarce. Pretty strong for 50cc class...I've rode a few different models and brands. Some are impressive and the price is right if you buy used. :D:D:D:D |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
my tl1000r and I will be just fine when TSHTF....

Very good for getting places indeed. But just getting around quietly among the needy...
http://friends-n-family-research.info/FFR/Merrill_ebiking.wmv At 25 mph, one can outrun any other people and bicycles. For a few pennies... The ebike I photographed from is attached. See it at www.goldenmotor.com It is good to have a spare too. Regards, David Merrill. |
Re: Motorcycle = Survival
I had a decent hardtail MTB which got stolen recently, now I am using my backup which was some cheap thing, nowhere near as good as the one stolen.
